Movement and Merging of Divisions

At D-BJJ events, our commitment is to provide athletes with the best possible experience, including when it comes to the number of matches. We understand that mat time is essential for technical development, which is why we always seek ways to ensure matches even when there is an imbalance in registrations.

It is common for some registrants to finish the registration period without direct opponents in their division. To address this, we adopt a system that allows adjustments—such as division changes or merging categories—always basing these decisions on technical criteria and focusing on competitive balance.

How do we decide on mergers or category changes?

Decisions are made by an experienced team of black belts with extensive experience in Jiu-Jitsu competitions. They follow a careful analysis based on three main factors:

1. Body Weight
This is the most relevant aspect, especially in kids' divisions, where weight differences can be decisive. That’s why weight ranges in these divisions are quite strict (generally between 3 and 5 kg). For adults, divisions usually have a larger range (up to 6 kg), allowing greater flexibility without creating major imbalances.

Even if an athlete is moved to another division, our team evaluates the actual weight difference between potential opponents to ensure safety and fairness.

2. Belt Rank (Skill Level)
Division by belt rank is essential to maintaining fair competitiveness among athletes. Our priority is always to keep competitors in their original belt division, but in some cases, merging categories with different belt ranks may be the only viable alternative.

3. Age
Although considered, age carries less weight in our analysis. Kids' divisions, for example, are typically split into 2- to 3-year intervals, but minor differences—such as a few days—could technically place athletes in different divisions. Our evaluators consider the exact age (based on the precise birth date), not just the formal category limit, to make fairer decisions.

How does the process work?

The team analyzes the above criteria sequentially. If at least two criteria are compatible, the athlete may be moved or reallocated automatically. If only one criterion is met, we will contact the athlete to present options. And if none of the criteria are viable, we will issue a refund or a full voucher for the next event, and the athlete will be notified via email or phone.

Our goal is to ensure all athletes have the opportunity to compete safely, respectfully, and fairly, even in divisions with few registrants.
